Daily Devotion: Rooted and Growing
Receive Before You Reach
READ John 15:1-8; Ephesians 2:8-10
You may begin this day with a list of things you want to change about yourself. Be
more patient. Pray more consistently. Stop reacting so quickly. Those desires can be
good. Yet a list of improvements cannot supply the life that makes growth possible.
Jesus describes Himself as the vine and His disciples as branches. A branch bears
fruit because it remains connected to its source. It cannot produce life by looking
more determined. The picture invites us to begin with dependence on Christ.
Abiding involves real responses. We attend to His words, pray, obey, and practice
love. But the order matters. We are responding to His grace, not building a case for
why He should finally receive us.
Ephesians 2 places our good works after God's
gracious work of making us alive in Christ.
Consider an ordinary moment of impatience. You can grit your teeth and decide that
today you will prove you are a better Christian. Or you can acknowledge your need:
"Jesus, I want to love this person well, and I need Your help." Then you can choose a
clear request, take a needed pause, or correct the harsh sentence you just spoke.

Depending on Jesus does not remove your responsibility. It changes where you look
for strength and where you return when you struggle. You do not have to carry the
weight of being your own source of life.
Before reaching for another goal, turn your attention to the Savior who calls you to
remain in Him. Let today's practice begin in relationship. Fruit grows from a living
connection being tended over time.
PRACTICE TODAY
Read John 15 slowly. Name one responsibility you have been carrying as though you must
handle it without Christ or the help of others. Ask for help, then take one faithful step.
PRAYER
Jesus, You are my source of life. Teach me to receive Your grace and respond with willing
obedience. Let my growth come from remaining close to You. Amen.
